Good Friday happens to be the first day of Easter weekend, arriving 48 hours before the main event, Easter Sunday. The name “Good Friday” may suggest good things about this event. However, it is the other way around. A lot happened on Good Friday. It is perhaps the most significant day in the history of Christianity, prompting followers of this religion to celebrate Easter, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Why do Christians celebrate Good Friday?
The story behind Good Friday is harrowing. It caused a major religious division worldwide for thousands of years. Ultimately, Christians celebrate the death of Jesus because they believe he was the Son of God and died for their sins.
What happened on Good Friday?
According to the Bible, on the eve of Good Friday (Maundy Thursday), Jesus told his disciples to expect his death during the last supper. Later, one of his disciples, Judas, betrayed him, which helped the royal soldiers find Jesus in Gethsemane for 30 silver coins. The soldiers arrested Jesus and took him to the house of Annas, where he was interrogated by the father-in-law of a high priest, Caiaphas. 
Jesus was silent at first, but when asked if he was the Son of God, he replied: “You said it, and in time you will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, seated at the right hand of the Almighty.
Meanwhile, Jesus’ disciple Peter thrice denied in front of bystanders that he was the Son of God, just as the leader had prophesied. Ultimately, his testimony meant that Caiaphas accused him of blasphemy and the Sanhedrin sentenced him to death.
On Good Friday
The next morning Jesus was taken to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate on the three charges:
- undermine the nation
- taxes against Caesar
- Call yourself a king

Pilate instructed the Jewish authorities to try him according to their laws, but they replied that Roman law could not do so. Following a Passover custom that required the governor to ask the assembled crowd to decide which of the two captives should be released from custody, the crowd, led by the high priests, asked about Barabbas (who had previously been jailed for murder) . ) to be released. They demanded the crucifixion of Jesus.
Jesus was whipped and taken to the crowd and set free. But after learning of their request, he brought Jesus back to the palace and demanded to know where he was from. After listening to Jesus’ words, he declared him innocent and washed his hands with water in front of the crowd to show that he had no part in this condemnation.
Despite the action, he handed Jesus over to crucifixion to stop the uprising and keep his job. A crown of thorns was placed on his head. Then he was whipped and tied to a wooden cross. He had to carry his cross to the place of execution. Jesus was crucified along with two other criminals. He lived on the cross for six more hours. Darkness is said to have settled over the country in the last three hours.
Before his death, Jesus exclaimed, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
