The potential for a near-term spike in gold and silver prices as Comex futures roll in May, a fair amount for 1,000 ounce silver bars and why April 2022 is different than April 2011.

CPM Group’s Jeff Christian discusses the near-term prospects for gold and silver. He addresses reasonable premiums for 1,000 ounce silver bars. He then discusses the potential for a near-term spike in silver prices if May Comex futures contracts continue. He reviews data from April and May 2011, when the Comex May futures roll pushed silver prices sharply higher in April, only to fall back within five days of the roll ending. He compares the silver market in 2011 to 2022 and says such a rise is highly unlikely given current market conditions, but emphasizes the impact that forward rolling nearby active futures contracts can have on prices at times.
